Victoria Rubinstein

Guest Artist at 1) Gwen Granzow Fine Art

Victoria Rubinstein’s lineage as working artist is a long one, spanning many generations. She was taught at a very young age to never draw within the lines, and to always think creatively for herself. After earning a BFA in drawing and painting her journey took her on a path of varied mediums. From painting on fibers to designing children’s clothing, to finally making ceramics.

After years of being an avid gardener she heard the earth calling to her. She found throwing clay was the perfect medium to watch things grow, but it was her trip to Italy that was the turning point. She was mesmerized by the beauty of the carving, and sculpture. It inspired her to do sgraffito on clay, marrying her love for drawing, and painting.

Unlike all the previous mediums she has worked in, she currently no longer makes patterns or drawings. She designs as she carves, following the lead of her hands. The black slip silently falls away and reveals the beauty of the white porcelain below. Flowers, waves, and ribbons seem to magically appear before her eyes.
