SASI Chambers

Sasi Chambers’ current artwork is a Mixed Media process called “Tarpage.” It incorporates unorthodox materials including a double layer of polyvinyl tarps and Duck tape, with decorative patterning drawn on the surface using colorful Oil markers. The Duck tape is then highlighted with the addition of beads and sequins sewn on with embroidery floss resulting in a multilayered artwork similar to Reverse Appliqué. The images depicted include trees, houses, houses in trees, fish, snakes, elephants, giant eyes, flames, waves, and lightning. The surface patterning is informed by street art murals, “graffiti writing,” African and Aboriginal motifs, and traditional quilting. Sasi’s inspirations come from having lived overseas for 8 years as a child and then living in New Orleans; Seattle; Jackson Heights in Queens, NY; Woodstock, IL; and Boise, ID before moving to BayView, Milwaukee with her family in 2023. This January her dream studio was completed in what used to be her garage. She now has walls which can accommodate even her largest 8’ X 10’ pieces, has plenty of floor space, and a work table big enough on which to spread out and complete the fabrication of the Tarpages.
