Sarah Hunt-Frank creates one-of-kind, hand-built vases, using elegant lines to depict images in nature. She admires Japanese art and design: the subtle suggestion of an image with a few simple strokes, the delicate balance of a vessel. Out of this interest, she created a distinctive style of slab-rolled, two-seamed vases in tall elegant forms, with delicately implied images.
Sarah began making pottery in 2015 as a hobby. In high school, she had art classes at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, and Saturday classes at Purdue University. She earned degrees in art and theater at Ball State University, and has been a professional Theatrical Scenic Designer and Scenic Artist for 30 years.
My vases have pleasing almond-shaped silhouettes, the smooth surface contrasting with the rough opening at the top of the vase, and are decorated with designs inspired by Japanese art. In all of her work, she strives for sophisticated, elegant forms and simple, suggestive shapes.
