Jean Wells is a Milwaukee-based potter with over 30 years of experience creating contemporary stoneware. Known for her graphic, hand-carved surfaces, she uses the traditional sgraffito technique to draw and carve designs through layers of colored clay, making each piece unique. Thrown on the wheel, her forms are simple, sturdy, and made for daily use.

Jean studied ceramics at the Cleveland Institute of Art (1985–1988) and apprenticed with John and Claire Bailey at Geneva Art Pottery in 1990. She established her Milwaukee studio in the early 1990s and continues to sell her work at regional art fairs, from her home studio in Brown Deer, and online.

Her work has included a series of limited-edition mugs for Colectivo Coffee and commissioned pieces for the U.S. Open Championships at Erin Hills in 2017 and 2025. Jean serves on the Board of Directors for Wisconsin Craft and is a member of the Milwaukee Artists Resource Network. She is also a co-founder of Milwaukee Empty Bowls, which has raised over $1 million for local food programs.
